After the first Sacramento Urban Plunge ended, I prepared to host the second week bringing 15 students from UC Berkeley. Not knowing any of the students had seemingly created an opportunity and challenge (how do you memorize 15 names quickly)?
Well, we dug right in and got to know each other through a city scavenger hunt, an exercise that examines the structures at work in a city, and all kinds of activities.
We also went to Winters and were incredibly blessed by the passion, generosity, and honesty of some folks who gave a picture (and a posh short experience) of what their lives are like in the fields and ranches and farms there. The group learned valuable stories about community organizing and empowerment (PICO) and how that has played out in Winters.
We were also blessed by folks who provided food and showers all throughout the week. THANK YOU, generous friends!
We also had time in Scripture together, learning about God's heart and possibilities for our futures.
We spent most of our time at the Dream Center and surrounding area, participating in organizations and ministries like Loaves and Fishes and the Dream Center's MANNA Outreach and even got to visit The GreenHouse neighborhood.
All in all, it was a full week. We had fun getting to know one another and see the places God was intersecting in each of our lives.
It was sad when we said our good-byes at the end of the week, yet we were satisfied to know that God was and will continue to be forming us through the experience!
